Reimagining The Traditional European Summer

Imagine a sophisticated European summer vacation: strolling through Italy in elegant sundresses enjoying gelato, sunbathing on Portugal’s stunning beaches, or exploring Spain’s vibrant bar scene. While these images may conjure up idyllic scenes, they often overlook the crowds of tourists that flock to these destinations each season. Fortunately, Europe offers a multitude of beautiful, less crowded destinations where you can savour picturesque landscapes, delicious cuisine, and delightful weather in peace.

1. ANTWERP, BELGIUM

Often overshadowed by Brussels, Bruges, and Liege, Antwerp is a historic city with much to offer. Arriving by train, you’ll be greeted by the stunning art nouveau Antwerpen-Central Train Station. Discover the city’s rich history at the Red Star Line Museum, the Cathedral of Our Lady, and enjoy a different kind of pilgrimage by visiting local breweries to taste the famous Belgian beer.

2. SARDINIA, ITALY

Italy remains a top summer destination in Europe, famed for its delectable cuisine, sunny weather, charming streets, and beautiful beaches. While Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, and Tuscany are popular for good reason, Sardinia deserves its share of attention. This island west of mainland Italy is a paradise for food lovers, offering an abundance of fresh seafood and quality meats featured in pies and hearty stews. Pasta enthusiasts will delight in the region’s gnocchi. Beyond the culinary delights, explore Sardinia’s impressive lime gorges and cliffs, relax on pristine beaches, and visit Nuraghe Su Nuraxi for a glimpse into the region’s vibrant history.

3. HAY-ON-WYE, WALES

Book enthusiasts, this one’s for you. While London, Edinburgh, and Bath draw the majority of UK visitors, the charming town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales is a hidden gem worth exploring. Known as the “Town of Books,” its quaint, cottage-lined streets are filled with art galleries, antique shops, and, naturally, an abundance of bookshops. Enjoy a cup of tea at a cozy café while perusing your latest literary finds. Time your visit to coincide with the renowned Hay Festival, one of the world’s largest literary festivals, held in late May to early June. Beyond books, you can enjoy canoeing on the river, hiking trails, visiting castles, and more.

4. GRANADA, SPAIN

For a tranquil European retreat in Spain, bypass the bustling cities of Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, or Ibiza and head to Granada. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains’ valley, Granada boasts rich Moorish heritage evident in landmarks like the magnificent Alhambra, a fortified palace with lush gardens. The Royal Chapel and Basilica San Juan de Dios are also must-sees. After exploring, savor a variety of tapas at local restaurants. To fully immerse yourself in the local culture, visit a cave bar for an authentic flamenco show.

5. ÉVORA, PORTUGAL

While Lisbon’s cobbled streets and delicious pasteis de nata are delightful, the summer crowds can be overwhelming. Instead, head to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about an hour and a half from the capital. Located in the heart of Alentejo, Portugal’s agricultural hub, Évora boasts historical monuments, regional delicacies, and sprawling vineyards. Visit the ancient Roman Temple of Évora and the grand Gothic Cathedral. Take home unique souvenirs from the city’s boutique shops, offering ceramics, wines, olive oil, and more.

In these destinations, you’ll find all the charm and beauty of a European summer, minus the crowds.
