For a quick escape from the urban hustle, Dubai residents often dream of the Maldivian shores. But what if you could find a slice of paradise that’s as kind to the planet as it is to your soul? Our recent journey to OBLU Select Sangeli was more than just a luxurious getaway; it was a masterclass in mindful travel. From the moment we landed to the last golden sunset, we discovered that true bliss lies in finding the perfect balance between indulgence and responsibility. This is a glimpse into our sustainable sojourn, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice style for stewardship.

Day 1 – Arrival & First Sunset
The moment we landed in Malé, the warmth of the Maldives greeted us with a personal touch placards at the airport and a cheerful welcome committee waiting just for us. From there, we were whisked away to the harbour where a luxe speedboat was ready to take us across the glittering waters. The 45-minute ride felt like the perfect prelude to paradise sea spray, sunlight, and endless shades of turquoise.
➳ As we reached the island, the entire staff lined up as a welcome committee, greeting us with refreshing drinks and the sound of indigenous music. It felt ceremonial, festive, and deeply genuine. We were escorted to our elegant water villa where champagne, red and white wine, a platter of fresh fruits, and homemade chocolates were waiting a thoughtful gesture that immediately set the tone for the weekend.

➳ Lunch was at The Courtyard, a lively all-day dining spot, where the buffet spread combined international favourites with comforting Indian dishes. Among the salads, grills, and curries, one stood out a delicately spiced coastal-style tomato fish curry served with steamed rice.

➳ The evening unfolded beautifully at the Rock Bar, perched for panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. A live saxophonist filled the air with golden notes while bartenders crafted cocktails that quickly became favourites the pina coladas were heavenly, and the Bloody Mary packed the perfect punch.

➳ Afterward, drinks by the poolside continued the rhythm, accompanied by a three-piece band playing retro English hits that made the night feel nostalgic yet alive.

➳ Dinner back at The Courtyard was a seafood lover’s dream with fresh platters served, and the evening ended on a celebratory note a special birthday cake and a tiramisu sent out for one of our group members, with staff joining in the festivities.
Day 2 – Serenity, Sustainability & Flavours

➳ We began the day with yoga by the beach, the sound of waves syncing with breath and movement a moment of pure grounding. Breakfast at The Courtyard followed, where the buffet stretched across continents: crispy dosas and idlis, Chinese stir-fries, American pancakes, fresh pastries, and more.

➳ The late morning took us on an island tour. This was more than sightseeing; it was an immersion into the resort’s commitment to sustainability. We learned about the artificial coral reefs built to support marine health, watched as fish were fed, and discovered how the island runs almost entirely on eco-conscious practices biodegradable products only, waste converted into biogas, and an impressive solar plant powering much of the resort. It was both inspiring and reassuring to see luxury and responsibility coexist so seamlessly.

➳ By afternoon, we slipped into the familiar ritual of cocktails at the poolside bar before getting ready for dinner at Just Wok. The evening here was a culinary journey through Pan-Asian flavours silky salmon, delicate dim sums, and crisp gyozas made for an unforgettable spread.
Day 3 – Ocean Play & Evening Adventure

➳ This morning was all about joy and play by the sea swings suspended over the shallows, slides into the water, and long swims in the sunlit lagoon. A special Indian breakfast followed at The Courtyard, with regional delicacies served that reminded us of home while surrounded by paradise.
➳ In the afternoon, we indulged in a couple’s spa treatment. A dry thigh-stretching massage was both restorative and surprisingly energising, followed by soothing cups of herbal tea that lingered on the palate as much as in the body.
➳ Later, we joined a fishing expedition with fifteen other residents. A boat carried us to a prime spot where the staff provided rods, bait, chum, and expertise. The experience was thrilling casting lines into the deep blue, waiting in anticipation, and the exhilaration of hauling in big catches.

➳ Evening brought us back to the familiar comfort of cocktails at the poolside bar, our favourite ritual by now, before dinner at Just Grill. The open-flame teppanyaki was spectacular tender lamb chops, fresh mahi-mahi, and sizzling seafood prepared before our eyes, each bite paired with perfectly balanced drinks.
Day 4 – A Fond Farewell

➳ Our last morning came too quickly. With bags packed and hearts full, we bid farewell to the island not just to the villas, bars, and restaurants, but to the people who had filled each moment with warmth, music, and joy.

➳ OBLU Select Sangeli was more than a destination it was a celebration of culture, luxury, sustainability, and love. A trip that began with placards at the airport ended with memories etched deep, of sunsets with saxophones, barefoot mornings on the beach, and laughter echoing across the lagoon.
As we left OBLU Select Sangeli behind, what stayed with us was not just the beauty of its lagoons or the luxury of its villas, but the philosophy that guided every detail of the experience. The coral restoration projects, the commitment to renewable energy, the use of biodegradable products, and the respect for marine life all stood as reminders that true luxury today must also mean responsibility.

In the 21st century, travel cannot just be about indulgence it must also be about stewardship. If we are to preserve the oceans that cradle islands like these and protect the wildlife that makes them so extraordinary, we must choose destinations and practices that are as ethical as they are beautiful.
OBLU Select Sangeli showed us that it is possible to have both unforgettable moments of joy and romance, and a model of sustainability that ensures these wonders remain for generations to come.
