Ferrari Goes Electric: Inside the Unconventional New ‘Luce’

Maranello has officially crossed its most significant engineering Rubicon with the global debut of the Ferrari Luce, the legendary brand’s first-ever fully electric vehicle. Unveiled at a theatrical, high-profile premiere, the €550,000 ($640,000) hyper-EV marks a radical, unprecedented departure from Ferrari’s historic sports car blueprint. Instead of a traditional, low-slung two-seater, the Luce arrives as a sleek, four-door grand tourer featuring the company’s first-ever five-seat configuration—a bold layout designed to welcome a new generation of high-net-worth families into the Prancing Horse fold.

To shape this historic vehicle, Ferrari bypassed its usual styling motifs, collaborating closely with LoveFrom, the creative collective co-founded by legendary former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive and acclaimed designer Marc Newson. The partnership yielded a highly unconventional, ultra-minimalist wedge silhouette dominated by a sweeping, glass-heavy dome. By stripping away Ferrari’s signature aggressive air scoops, muscular rear haunches, and traditional grilles, the ultra-smooth aesthetic has deeply polarized automotive purists and sparked massive debate online.

Inside the cabin, the minimalist philosophy continues, completely reimagining the luxury driver experience. A layered dashboard architecture seamlessly integrates advanced Samsung OLED displays alongside beautifully tactile, mechanical switchgear, successfully balancing cutting-edge technology with classic luxury. The spacious interior prioritizes premium comfort for all five passengers, providing a futuristic environment that feels entirely distinct from any Prancing Horse cockpit that came before it.

Beneath the controversial aesthetic lies a masterclass in Maranello engineering, proving that electrification hasn’t compromised the brand’s performance DNA. Built entirely in-house on a bespoke EV platform, the Luce is powered by an advanced 800-volt architecture and a massive 122-kWh structural battery pack. The vehicle utilizes four independent electric motors one at each wheel to punch out a staggering 1,035 horsepower and over 1,000 Nm of torque.

This sophisticated quad-motor setup allows for hyper-precise torque vectoring, catapulting the 2.2-ton luxury cruiser from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 2.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 325 km/h. To satisfy sensory expectations, Ferrari has entirely rejected artificial internal combustion engine sounds. Instead, engineers developed an authentic acoustic profile that naturally amplifies the mechanical frequencies of the electric motors, creating a unique, futuristic roar under heavy acceleration.

While the financial markets reacted with initial caution and stock volatility to the radical reveal, Ferrari executives remain highly confident in their long-term vision. The Luce is not meant to replace the roaring V12 engines that defined the brand’s past, but rather to pioneer its future by capturing tech-forward buyers in EV-dominant luxury markets. With traditional combustion engine order books already fully booked well into the future, the Luce stands as a calculated, high-tech revolution for the automotive world.
