Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) got off to a spectacular start with New York luxury label Carolina Herrera’s creative director Wes Gordon unveiling his Spring-Summer 2024 showcase at the Dubai Design District (d3) on October 9. As far as good starts go, Gordon’s showcase was audacious, whimsical, and opulent.
“My goal with this collection was to design very wearable pieces that are still fabulous. The idea of casual and dressy is so old-fashioned. Right now, I think clothes should just be amazing and you must only wear what you love. All those pieces in this collection reflects that philosophy.”
The next big game changer was Fad Talents by Fad Dubai. the talented students of Fad Dubai took the runway with their impressive creations. Fad Dubai is an institute dedicated to promoting luxury fashion and style within the region and beyond by offering courses, skill development, and entrepreneurial mentoring for undergraduates and postgraduates in the fashion industry.
Bringing elegance and femininity back was Poca & Poca, a perennial favorite, once again delivered a collection that exuded feminine confidence and strength. Their lineup seamlessly blended floral patterns with wide shoulders, creating a sense of empowerment.
Transparent trousers, wide-leg pants, and airy fabrics breathed a new freshness into the fashion landscape. The colour palette, featuring pristine whites, soft creams, delicate beiges, subtle pinks, and timeless blacks, was brought to life by signature ruffles and flounces. The versatility of these looks effortlessly transitioned from day to night, catering to the contemporary empowered woman.
Filipino designer Michael Cinco drew the curtains at the debut Dubai Fashion Week with an opulent presentation. “I was influenced by the breathtaking structure, because for me, it is one of the most beautiful casa’s in the world as its just so majestic. And it’s the closing show, the scale had to be grand” shared Michael as we caught up with him.
Known for his painstakingly detailed couture with luxe surface ornamentation, Michael introduced a number of structured and well-tailored relaxed fits to give the audience a sneak-peek of his ready-to-wear line within the finale collection.
“We’re now venturing into ready-to-wear, so I decided to design a couple of day wear pieces and juxtaposed it in this line,” explained Michael, as he gave us an overview of the presentation.
Overall, it seemed like the era of confusing lounge wear for fashion is finally over and formalwear is back. Dubai fashion week signals that the world of fashion is moving on to romance and glamour!
