How To Not Break Down After A Breakup

Heart breaks are terrible. Period. When that special someone walks out on us, our world comes crashing down and we are convinced that misery is going to be our life partner. No matter how many ‘the ones’ we lose, it hurts just the same. Yes, we get up and dare to fall in love again and again but that time after the break up can sometimes break us. Sorry for the harsh words but if your relationship just went out the window or is headed down that path, the following tips might be useful:

Reconnect with forgotten friends

When in a relationship, we often ignore our friends. They might complain for a bit, but then they just give up and let us be lost in love. Post your break up, open your contacts list and get back in touch with all those friends who you may have unknowingly left behind. If they genuinely care about you, they will abuse you first but then give you a tight hug and do what it takes to make you less gloomy.

Happy couples are a no-no

Looking at couples canoodling and laughing together is only going to make you feel worse. It will bring back old memories of you and your special someone. So, avoid locations where you are likely to spot people in love. In fact, go to the extent of maintaing your distance with friends who are in relationships. It might be selfish, but for once you are allowed to think solely about yourself.‘The Ice – Cream Tub’ Custom
Yes, this one is mostly for girls and absolutely not original; it is straight out of every rom-com ever: grab the largest tub of your favourite ice-cream, get into your jammies, and brace yourself for a marathon of sappy movies. Not sure if doing this will make you feel better or worse, but hey, if it works for Katherine Heigl and Kareena Kapoor, then it might just help you as well.

Work your ass off

Once we are single with no one eagerly waiting for us below our office building, there is no rush to get off work. Utilise all that extra time excelling at your job. Work odd hours, focus on increasing your efficiency, take up extra projects- do what it takes to make your boss happy enough to finally give his/her nod of approval to your long overdue promotion. Professional achievement definitely works as a confidence booster when our personal life brings us down.

Let there be tears

Cry your heart out at least once. Bottling up your feelings is unhealthy and does more harm than good. In a corner of your room, while looking out the window, during a shower, or on a loved one’s shoulder- choose your spot, but be sure to let it out.

Pack your Bags

Is everything around you constantly reminding you of him/her? Just leave the city for some time. Some people might tell you that you must not shy away from facing problems in life and running away is no solution. But if it floats your boat, block your ears to such preachy talk. Pick a place you have been wanting to visit for the longest time, or the one that always manages to lift your spirits, throw your essentials in a bag, and get away.

Rebound (if you must)

Yes, nobody can immediately replace that strong bond you shared with your lover. But if a nice guy/girl comes your way, who is lots of fun and capable of lessening your pain, give it a shot. He/she might just end up being a temporary rebound or who knows, they could also turn out to be the one you’ve always been waiting for.

Cliched Consolation:

  • Everything happens for the good.
  • Time heals it all.
  • Yes, you can survive without him/her.
  • Quoting Kelly Rowland: “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”
  • Enjoy, Explore, Evolve.
